About the course
Making a documentary isn't easy, particularly if you want people to actually watch it, and perhaps even get paid for the effort you put in!
This one day course takes you through the process of financing your documentary. The workshop will help you to understand the landscape of commissions, co-productions and distribution and with more varied opportunities for funding and distributing documentary films than ever before, you'll examine the hurdles and common pitfalls for documentary filmmakers.

The tutor will also examine the various routes to funding from domestic and international broadcast, theatrical and festival release, to online, mobile, corporate, NGO and gallery exhibition. As part of this process you will explore the kinds of docs that are being funded and why. You'll also explore funding for new media and cross platform - a big emerging area for documentary. The Credit Card Film‚ will also be discussed maxing out your credit card and hoping that someone will buy it or you will get completion money; You will explore some examples of when this has worked and the pitfalls you may face.Topics include:
- what broadcasters are looking for at the moment
- what makes a good film
- models of film financing in the UK
- European and international funding
- developing and maintaining a healthy relationship with funders
- opportunities for production for online TV stations
- protecting your ideas and intellectual copyright

Who teaches this course?
Lucy Baxter - Lucy has worked as producer, series producer, producer/director, line producer and production manager on several short films, feature films, drama series and TV documentaries, three of which, Mindreading, L8r and Holloway Hairdo have won BAFTA, RTS and Silver awards. Lucy has produced two short fiction films, and has been Series Producer and Producer/Director on current affairs series and singles for Channel 5, Current TV, More4 News and a cross platform Live Heart Surgery broadcast for the Wellcome Trust, BBC and Guardian online. Most recently she created a Specialist Factual series for the US market. In 2007 Lucy founded Mandrake Films, where she is currently Executive Producer.
