Whether you're a lowly person in the world of television or making films for love (or money) outside of broadcast, it can be a bit of an uphill struggle making the leap into becoming a fully-fledged documentary filmmaker working in the business. DFG will give you the insider tips to give your career a kick start, from navigating the television career ladder to the opportunities outside broadcast, and how to make the most of your short film.

Whether you're a lowly person in the world of television or making films for love (or money) outside of broadcast, it can be a bit of an uphill struggle making the leap into becoming a fully-fledged documentary filmmaker working in the business. DFG will give you the insider tips to give your career a kick start, from navigating the television career ladder to the opportunities outside broadcast, and how to make the most of your film.
The afternoon will start with an A-Z overview of the routes into the industry and the opportunities available for emerging filmmakers, before getting down to the nitty gritty of what you need to know to get ahead. Participants are invited to submit questions before the event in order to make this something that's really targeted to you.
Topics covered include:
- Access - Your major weapon in getting your foot through the door: how do you secure it and how do you keep is secure?
- Networking - It's a dirty job but someone's got to do it, and that someone is you. Find out how to do it without becoming like a contestant on The Apprentice.
- Production Companies - What are their role in helping you get your film made? Who should you approach and how? When to stick and when to quit - Your passion is one of your greatest assets, but it can also be your ultimate downfall. How do you tell when enough is enough?

Who teaches this course?
Kerry McLeod - Kerry has worked with Mosaic Films since 2007, most recently producing London Recut: an interactive web project in partnership with Film London, the BFI National Archive and London's Screen Archives. She also produced Britain Recut, in association with the BFI and Channel 4, while other credits include Life After Coma Channel 4, Art Shorts for Tate Media and Why Poverty? UK Shorts (Joseph Rowntree Foundation for BBC Storyville). Kerry also works with DFG's sister company Mosaic Films and in 2009 she helped develop Mosaic Films' digital distribution strategy as part of the company's participation in the NESTA/ UK Film Council 'Take 12' programme. She has spoken on the topic of building a career in documentary to a variety of audiences including students at UCA Farnham, and delegates at Forward Motion Festival Somerset, Images of Black Women Festival, Broadcast LIVE and Sheffield Doc/Fest.
