Switching to a Tapeless Camera - Sony EX1

About the course

Do you want to know how to use the new generation of tapeless HDV cameras? This intensive one-day workshop will help you explore the amazing potential of the Sony EX1 and get you shooting confidently using a tapeless workflow.


This highly practical course will give you the confidence to get the most out of the camera's full 1920 x 1080 HD resolution, progressive mode and numerous creative features. Memory cards add a unique dimension to your production, shortening the digitizing process, but requiring a clear, disciplined workflow to make sure footage is properly backed up. Handouts will lay out key workflow and menu settings.

    * Mastering key functions
    * Menu set up
    * Video format
    * Clip naming
    * Customized picture profile settings
    * Special effects
    * File management
    * Basic workflow
    * Importing clips and preparing for the edit
    * Managing your memory cards

During the day you'll learn how to work with the tapeless format and use practical shooting exercises to put your knowledge into action, with allocated time to review your footage. This course is a thorough introduction to filming with the EX-1. Suitable for people with some existing camera experience who want to switch to tapeless formats.

Who teaches this course?

Dylan Howitt - Dylan Howitt began making films on Super 8 in his teens, before studying Fine Art where he worked in photography, animation and video. He then switched to documentary making and has spent the last 14 years making scores of films all over the world mainly for TV (BBC, Channel 4, Five, Discovery, NHK and Community Channels) and NGOs. Some of his work as a Producer/Director and often also Cameraman/Editor includes Bolivia for Sale, BBC2 where actor Damien Lewis travels to Bolivia to witness first hand the impact of forced privatisation, 7 episodes of Rooted Five, in which children travel and discover where their families come from (Shortlisted for BAFTA / Royal TV society / One World Award) and Tree of Guns, BBC4 about a sculpture made of guns that symbolises the history and hopes of post war Mozambique. Other work includes The Boatman, Suits and Savages, Angola In The Frame, and Britain In Bloom. Dylan has made films all over the UK and in 30 countries worldwide. As a tutor Dylan has taught intensive camera and directing courses at DFG, and spent a year teaching video making and photography to children in Guatemala.
