DFG Presents The Future Of Documentary

SkateistanMonday 25th July, 5pm | Applestore Regent Street

Part of Rushes Soho Shorts Festival

Integrated, cross-platform media is a Holy Grail being sought across most genres of filmmaking but how does that effect documentary filmmakers? Does hard-hitting documentary filmmaking on serious subjects hold a place in the changing media landscape or will it be overtaken by ‘constructed reality’ and mockumentary? How will independent documentary find a home among branded entertainment? Indeed, what can documentary filmmakers learn about engaging audiences from their entertainment-led competitors? Just perhaps, some of these questions will be answered…

Speakers include:

Claire Faragher, producer of many fantastic docs but most recently Series Producer and Executive Producer on the Bafta award-winning The Only Way Is Essex for ITV2, where she introduced vajazzling and Joey Essex and his catchphrase 'reem' to the nation.

Orlando von Einsiedel, an ex-pro-snowboarder, who wove his way into filmmaking and whose film Skateistan, the only British short documentary to ever have been selected to screen at Sundance, is screening at the festival. Read our interview with him here.

Zara Hayes, Grierson-nominated director of The Seven Ages Of Love and the recent Travels With My Family for BBC Two's Wonderland strand.

Chloe Ruthven is an artist filmmaker who divides her time between making documentaries and working with children at risk of social exclusion. Mario and Nini, her first feature doc premiered at Sheffield in 2009 and then went on to be bought by Sky. Her second film, Death of a Hedge Fund Salesman won best emerging director at Open City last month.
