DocDay at Sheffield Doc/Fest

Wednesday 3 November 2010, 9.30am – 6pm (includes a DocDay film screening)

Why? DocDay is an inspiring, intensive and entertaining day of hands-on sessions and workshops for young filmmakers. It’s a chance to hear first hand from the professionals, and learn about how they approach documentary filmmakers.

Participants must all come with an idea for a short documentary, which they will develop with an industry mentor and pitch at the end of the day for a special prize (to be announced). Some of the best documentary practitioners from around the UK – directors, producers, editors and commissioners – will be there to help with the
process!

Who? DocDay is for A-level students (or 16-19 year olds) who are making, or want to make, documentaries and could use help from the experts. There will be presentations, workshops and a range of leading industry mentors available on the day to help students with their short doc ideas, giving feedback, advice and tips. The mentors are a mix of award-wining directors, commissioners, TV executives and other industry professionals – students will never find this kind of access to industry advice at any other event in the UK.

How? DocDay requests that teachers get students working on their ideas for a short documentary from September onwards – they must arrive at the workshop ready with a project that they are happy to pitch. This year’s pitches must fit into the theme of “Different stories out of Africa”. Students and teachers are strongly encouraged to get direct advice in advance by e-mail from either Amber Dobinson at DFG on amber@dfgdocs.com or Chris Black at Doc/Fest on chris@sidf.co.uk to help prepare for the workshop day.

Participants will gain an insight into what makes a good documentary, from how to tell a story to the perfect interview technique, before getting the chance to use their newfound knowledge in a real industry setting: The Pitch. Our industry pitching panel will include professionals from The WorldView Broadcast Media Scheme.

Further info: DocDay’s theme “Different stories out of Africa” has been set by The WorldView Broadcast Media Scheme (formerly the CBA-DFID Broadcast Media Scheme). WorldView’s objective is to improve UK understanding and awareness of the developing world via broadcast media. Find out more at: http://www.cba.org.uk/CBA-DFID/index.php
