Researching for Documentaries and Factual Television

 Are you keen to develop and improve your professional research skills?

Do you want to make your own documentary or get a job as a factual researcher in the TV industry?  If so, this course could be for you.

Knowing how to research for documentary filmmaking is an essential craft to master. In this intensive, practical workshop you will discover the different approaches to research needed for different factual genres. You will also learn how to access, analyse and use information in a confident manner, how to make the best use of the internet for film research, how to access archive footage and stills, and how to find contributors and locations.

This course is for participants wanting to develop and improve their research skills for their own independent documentary, to enter the industry or simply be able to research more creatively and effectively for factual programming.


The course will cover:
•    How to access, analyse and use information in a confident manner
•    How to make the best use of the internet for film research
•    How to access archive footage and stills
•    How to find contributors and locations
•    Working with different documentary genres
•    Considering production constraints (time & budget)

Participants are encouraged to develop a documentary idea in advance of the workshop - during the day you'll be able to explore how to research your ideas to maximum effect.

DFG is leading this course in colaboration with the Media Enterprise Centre, Hastings part of the University of Brighton.

 

Course Tutor: Lucy Baxter       

Lucy has worked as producer, series producer, producer/director and production manager on short films, feature films, drama series and TV documentaries for broadcasters such as BBC, ITV, Sky and Ch4 three of which, Mindreading, L8r and Holloway Hairdo have won BAFTA, RTS and Silver awards. Lucy has produced two short fiction films, and has been Series Producer and Producer/Director on current affairs series for Channel 5, Current TV, More4 News and a cross platform Live Heart Surgery broadcast for the Wellcome Trust, BBC and Guardian online.

Lucy also teaches documentary production at the Documentary Film makers Group, London Film Academy, and Queen Mary, University of London. Most recently she created a Specialist Factual series for the US market and series produced Fistula Hospital for Al Jazeera.
