09:30am: DFG Day Session 1: You Should Make Documentaries, Because...
In the business of learning how to get funding for documentaries we can often forget the inspiring stories, emotional connections and contagious passion that drive us to want to be part of this industry in the first place. This entertaining and informative seminar will offer the insight of producers, commissioning editors, filmmakers, funders and more who are not only going to inform us with the ‘how’ but also inspire us with the ‘why’. Hosted by DFG’s and Mosaic Film’s Chief Executive Andy Glynne, all input from the panellists will begin with the eponymous statement “You should make documentaries, because…”
Moderators: Andy Glynne & Simon Gilchrist
Speakers include: Sara Cropley, Emily James, Liz Mermin, Samantha Anstiss, Beadie Finzi & Brian Woods
11.00am: DFG Day Session 2: It’s all About the Story
Most emerging filmmaking talent come up against the same obstacle time and time again - a great idea, but no story – or at least a story that first needs to be found. This session is all about how to make sure your idea has a solid story arc and your film has a narrative that engages an audience from the start. Our panel made up of filmmakers, editors, execs and Commissioners will guide you through the tips and tricks of storytelling, the importance of finding your character and how to identify a clear structure through the multifarious themes that make up your doc idea.
Moderator: Christopher Hird. Participants: Mark Raphael, Olly Lambert, John Mister & Sandra Whipham
13.45pm: DFG Day Session 3: The Development Toolkit
The all-important toolkit for presenting a project to a potential funder includes the proposal, the taster tape and the pitch. You need to get your ideas across, but what do you include (or leave out)? Chaired by Nicola Lees author of Greenlit: Developing Factual Reality TV Ideas from Concept to Pitch and founder of www.tvmole.com, this open workshop will include a panel of experts from each of these areas. We’ll focus on the skills you need, and de-mystify the nuances and particulars.
Moderator: Nicola Lees
Speakers: Richard Sattin, Fernanda Rossi & Andrea Patterson
16.00: DFG Day Session 4: The DFG Pitch Supported by The Grierson Trust
