Superheroes and Dominoes

Domino is a popular game of skill and chance played by placing dominoes on a flat surface, usually a table. Each domino has a distinctive pattern of spots, or “pips,” on one side and is blank on the other. When the first domino is tipped over, it causes the next in line to tip over and so on until all the dominoes have fallen. This type of chain reaction is often used in games such as tic-tac-toe and poker. Dominoes may also be used in other types of positional games, such as rummy, in which one player places a domino edge-to-edge against another’s, forming a set.

In addition to being fun and educational, dominoes are an important tool for writers. They help teach the concept of domino effect, which describes how one small action can have much greater and sometimes catastrophic consequences. For example, a burglar could break into your house and steal some valuables. Then, you might decide to hide the items and go out for dinner. When you return, you might find the burglar has left a trail of dominoes behind him that lead right to your door. You might then grab a gun, turn on the lights and shoot the burglar. This could cause the whole building to explode, leading to massive destruction and possibly even death.

Lily Hevesh has been a huge fan of dominoes since she was 9 years old. She started out by playing with her grandparents’ classic 28-pack and later took to creating amazing domino setups online. Her YouTube channel, Hevesh5, has over 2 million subscribers. She has also used her domino skills to create unique sets for movies and TV shows, as well as events for celebrities such as Katy Perry.

Domino’s mutant powers allow her to manipulate the laws of probability, shifting odds in her favor and giving her the appearance of good luck. This ability is unconsciously generated by a psionic aura that surrounds her, and it can vary from causing enemy equipment to malfunction to hitting just the right button to shut down an overloading machine. She has also been able to use this power to telepathically manipulate others.

A career mercenary, Domino has joined forces with a variety of superhero groups including X-Men and X-Force, and had a brief romance with the mutant Colossus. She is a skilled fighter, weapons expert, martial arts master and linguist.

Just like Dominoes, stories need scenes that move the hero closer to or farther from the goal. Whether your heroine uncovers a clue that hints at the solution to the mystery, or she’s fighting off an attack from the bad guy, it’s important that the subsequent scene is timed correctly or the effect won’t be as dramatic. For pantsers (writers who don’t make outlines or plot ahead of time), this can mean avoiding a scene that’s too long or a scene that doesn’t have enough impact on the scenes before and after it.
