The Basics of Baccarat

Baccarat is a casino card game with three possible outcomes: player win, banker win or tie. It’s a game of pure chance with few complexities and is very popular among players looking for James Bond-style Las Vegas gambling fun. Its history dates back to medieval Italy where it was first played as a game for the upper class and aristocrats, but the popularity of the game really took off when it reached France centuries later. There are several different variations of the game such as punto banco, chemmy and baccarat banque but they all use the same rules.

The game starts with six decks of cards shuffled together and then dealt out to the table. There are from seven to 14 seats for the players and a dealer’s area. Players take turns to place their bets and once the bets for each half of the table equals the banker’s stake, play begins. Each hand is dealt two cards and the person with the hand that totals closest to 9 wins.

Each card is worth its own value and the tens digit is ignored. The values of the picture or face cards are 0 points, the numbers from 2-9 have their own value and the ace is worth one point. The value of the total is determined by adding up all the individual card values and then subtracting the tens digit. The game also features a system where the player can decide to draw a third card based on certain rules.

If the banker or player hands are naturals (values of nine or eight), they will win their bets. If neither of the hands has a natural, the bets on either the banker or player are paid out according to a set of rules known as “drawing rules”. In addition, if a third card is drawn, a new round starts.

Baccarat can be very complicated but once you get the hang of it, you will find it quite easy to play. You have the choice of betting on a player or banker hand and you can bet as much or as little as you like. You must remember, though, that when you bet on the banker’s hand, a commission is paid to the casino which will reduce your winnings.

In traditional casinos, players used to deal the cards but online baccarat is played on a special table where the dealer or caller deals the cards and presents them on a wooden paddle or pallet. This removes the temptation for cheating and is an effective way to prevent any manipulation of the cards. Players are also not allowed to touch the cards which helps to prevent any fraud. This is why the game has become so popular in the modern world of casino gaming. It can be found in every conceivable venue from sticky-floor California card rooms to the tuxedo-laden casinos of Monaco. Baccarat has also featured in several filmed adaptations of the James Bond series including Dr. No; Thunderball; On Her Majesty’s Secret Service; For Your Eyes Only and GoldenEye.
