A Documentary Production and Training Initiative for Scientists and Filmmakers. Explore The Potential Of Science On Film.
Enter the world where surgeons administer shocks to patients’ hearts to brace them for surgery, and body odours are being used in the fight against malaria. This is no wacky parallel universe. This is the incredible world of current science.
In January 2008, eight scientists and eight filmmakers were challenged to collaborate as part of the groundbreaking initiative: Science On Film.
Created by DFG and the Wellcome Trust, Science On Film was an intensive training and film production scheme designed to promote collaboration between biomedical scientists and documentary filmmakers, and inspire fresh ways of thinking about science on film.
The sixteen participants were given intensive hands-on training in the documentary production process. Whilst seminars from leading broadcast professionals and scientists including David Malone, David Dugan, Anne Laking (BBC Executive Producer of Science Programming), and Jennifer Rohn encouraged them to explore new ways of making science accessible and exciting to the public without compromising its integrity.
Working in pairs, the scientists and filmmakers were then challenged to co-direct short films inspired by biomedical science.
